Banks
Most banks are open 8.30 am till about 2pm. You may exchange
your money at banks, exchange bureaus or hotels, the commission
charged can vary from place to place we would recommend that you
check the charges before handing over your money. Anyone coming
from Scotland, please note that for some obscure reason Banks and
Exchanges will not accept Clydesdale Bank Notes of any denomination.

Casino
The Grand Casino De Lanzarote, on Avenida de las Playas, 12,
in Puerto Del Carmen is open from 11.00am to 4.00 am seven days
a week.
Chemists
Practically all medicines are cheaper than in the UK and in most
cases can be obtained without prescription. Most pharmacists are
bilingual and very knowledgeable.
Currency
The currency in Spain as of 1st January 2000 is the Euro. There
are seven notes, values of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Euros.
Coins are in the following denominations: 10, 20 & 50 cent coins
are made of bronze - the 1 & 2 Euro coins are made of a combination
of 2 metals (similar to our £2 coin). Exchange rates between the
Euro and Sterling will fluctuate, but currently the Euro is worth
about 70 pence.
Customs
In spite of belonging to Spain the Canary Islands are not part
of the EEC and have special status. Each person over 15 years of
age is allowed to take from the island the following:- 250 g of
Coffee, 100 g of Tea, 50 g of Perfume. Persons over 17 years of
age: 1 l of Alcoholic drinks with an alcoholic content over 22%
or 2 l of an alcoholic drinks with a content less than 21%, 200
cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 g of tobacco. Over the last few years
UK customs have become very strict on people returning from the
Canaries with excessive amounts of cheap cigarettes, beware there
is a very high chance the you will get stopped.
Diving
The submarine world on the coasts of Lanzarote is worth seeing.
Several diving schools offer their services, such as 'Island Watersports'
in Puerto Calero - telephone (0034) 928 511880 or 'Safari Diving'
in Puerto del Carmen - telephone (0034) 928 511992.
Doctors
Several International doctors offer their services at various tourist
centres throughout Puerto Del Carmen, Playa Blanca & Costa Teguise,
there is no NHS on the Canary Islands so be prepared to pay for
your treatment. Always remember to take your insurance documents
with you to the doctors as this normally restricts your direct cost
to about £50.
Drinking Water
Tap water in Lanzarote comes from the sea via a desalination process
which allows it to be used safely for cooking or brushing your teeth.
However, we would recommend that you purchase bottle water for drinking.
A 5 litre container will cost from around 1 Euro. Desalinated water
is expensive to produce - please do not waste it.
Driving
International traffic regulations apply. Seat belts are compulsory
and carries an on the spot fine if caught driving without one. Always
remember that they drive on the opposite side of the road from the
UK.
Ferry
For a trip across to Fuerteventura there are daily trips from Playa
Blanca harbour Departure times are every hour from 0.800 hrs to
19.00 hrs. Several Other boat trips are organised daily from the
Old Town Harbour in Puerto Del Carmen.
Golf
Visitors are welcome daily @ Club de Golf at Costa Teguise, on the
road to Tahiche. This is a truly lovely spot where both golfers
and non-golfers can enjoy a drink or a meal at any time of the day.
Golf equipment can be hired at a reasonable cost.

Horse Riding
There are two riding schools close to Puerto Del Carmen at Rancho
Texas & Yaiza which offer a variety of treks through local countryside,
for riders of all abilities.
Nudism
In tourist areas, today nobody has anything against people being
topless, however nudism is not allowed, anybody wishing to practice
nudism must go to the Papagayo and Famara beaches
Submarine Safaris
At Puerto Calero submarine tours are offered in a 20m long submarine
which dives down to about 30m (100 ft) for durations of up top 1
hour. Worth a shot if you cant do the real thing.
Swimming
You may swim without danger at the beaches of Puerto Del Carmen,
Playa Blanca & Costa Teguise. Other areas have strong currents and
extreme care is necessary.

you then omit the first digit of your normal STD number I.E. if
